The Vaillant ecoTEC Plus we attended was around 8 to 10 years old, well within a serviceable age and in good overall condition. The casing was intact, the flue appeared clean from the outside, and there were no visible leaks, pressure issues or unusual noises. On the surface, it was a boiler doing exactly what it should.
That changed once we carried out the flue gas analysis. The readings showed a high CO to CO₂ ratio, which is not something that can be noted and left until the next visit. It’s a clear sign of incomplete combustion, meaning the boiler is not burning gas as it should. When this happens, efficiency drops and more importantly, there is a risk of carbon monoxide being produced. Carbon monoxide is colourless, odourless and extremely dangerous.
We explained the situation clearly to the customer. This was not something we could safely sign off as a standard service. The correct approach was to carry out a full strip down, remove the combustion components, identify the cause of the issue and clean the system properly to restore safe operation.
